We are pleased to announce that METAS will be fully support Secondary School IoT Design Competition 2017. The competition integrating STEM and Innovative in education, to giving students a chance to understand how IoT system works.
Cisco Networking Academy – The 12th Hong Kong-Macau Teenager Networking Contest
Cisco co-hosted The 12th Hong Kong-Macau Teenager Networking Contest by Cisco Networking Academy with education sector, has come to a satisfactory completion. The purpose of the contest is to enhance the technology knowledge of college and secondary school students, deepening their skills on information technology, and strengthening their interest and experience in networking technology. In the near future, Internet would be a crucial platform for students to display their imagination, and IoT is one of the big trends. METAS participated in an IoT contest, using METAS 8266 and I/O Bits to their fullest, letting students to put their hands on the joy within.
This year, METAS has supported a contest. With strict tests on theories and skills, which require students’ basic networking skills. Preparing them for Internet of Everything, it basically means connecting people, process, data and thing on the Internet, bringing the next generation of development on Internet.
In the event, all of the winning teams have displayed high level of networking skills. It was the 12th year Cisco Networking Academy hosted this event, drawing over 1200 students, spanning from Hong Kong to Macau, to join this event. Through the contest, students had a deeper understanding that we are in the era of IoT, millions of devices and equipment have connect to the Internet, and we are heading to the direction of Internet of Everything, all the static things are given with new lives, coupled with surprising interaction.
In fact, Internet of Things means that thing and thing are connected. And Internet of Everything adds the element of people, as a part of the connection, also an important factor of sensing and perceiving. Everybody interacts with things creates data, which starts another action, and influencing the real world. Thus changing the lifestyle of people, such as education, transportation, medication and entertainment.
“Tomorrow starts here, every tomorrow is future.” On the first phase, Internet means basic web browser, email and searching engine. In networking economy, the rise of e-business is the second phase. The third phase is social media, mobile, and all kinds of cloud applications. On the fourth phase, Internet of Everything connects people, data and daily objects, “networking is more related and versatile than before, offering a greater economic value to companies and countries.” Before people having their first step, METAS provides a platform for information.
2016 METAS Science Innovation Contest
Hosted by Hong Kong Maker Association, with the assistance of Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks, 2016 METAS Science Innovation Contest has come to a successful conclusion yesterday. Appreciations to all of the guests, judges, volunteers, supporting institutions and most importantly, we have to thank students and teachers. Witnessing students who were concentrating on preparing for the contest, and gave their all effort during the game, learning through the contest is a crucial part of STEM learning.
STEM and Maker Education Initiative
“Maker” means a group of people who love technology and love to practice. They are excited to share skills and thoughts, as well as enjoying the process of making things. They have a community called Hackerspace, which is very popular in other countries. From individuals to a culture, different organizations helped grouping up these people, who tend to be younger nowadays. Governments has held different kind of events to promote the culture of maker. Yet in a fast-paced city like Hong Kong, we look for the results and efficiency and neglect the importance of the process of making. Hong Kong Maker Association’s purpose is to promote the idea of young makers, allowing children cultivate the spirit of a maker and let their imagination soar. In the meantime, learning computational thinking and engineering design process.
METAS Science Innovation Contest
METAS Science Innovation Contest is the first large-scale event hosted by Hong Kong Maker Association. There were 20 teams from 13 schools, including mainland students who come from Beijing and Chengdu. The whole event has 4 sections: Football World Cup, Problem-solving Challenge, Obstacle Race and Smart Car Challenge. Competition was intense in Football World Cup, students could modify the football car provided by METAS. 2 people a team, 5 minutes a round, the victory would go to the team with more goals. Students needed to use different shapes of plastic blocks to enhance their football car, like its containment and the overall control on the ball. It was not solely about the modification of the car, but also the spirit within the team. At the end of the day, friendship comes first, victory comes second. You can’t win unless you learn how to lose.
